WFATA Wake Forest Area Tennis Association

Ray Goldberg - President

Ray Goldberg is an avid tennis player who started playing when wood rackets were the only rackets available. He plays in several USTA competitive leagues each year. His first tennis experience since moving to North Carolina was playing at Avery Cup where he met dozens of tennis players and had great fun!

Claudio SanchezClaudio - Vice-President

Claudio Sanchez was reintroduced to the great sport of tennis three years ago in Wake Forest and just can’t get enough. In his youth he had the honor of serving as a ball boy for a Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova match when they competed in the Virginia Slims Tournament in Southern California in the early Seventies. After being away from the game for quite a while, it’s amazing how it all comes back. He has absolutely enjoyed all the great tennis and players he has met in the Wake Forest Tennis Program. He has competed in Avery Cup, USTA, and World Team Tennis out of Wake Forest. He hopes to make positive contributions to make the tennis program at Wake Forest Flaherty Park fun and competitive.

David Jerose - Secretary

David has been playing tennis in Wake Forest since moving up the road from Raleigh in 1998.  He has been a World Team Tennis Captain for the 3.5 Slice and Dice Team, which may make a comeback this summer!  He has been playing on various singles ladders over the years, trying to break that 4.0 barrier.  He is a past Avery Cup participant and substitute. Currently he has a four year Monday morning Quad with Pastor Jimmy, Al and Bill that has invited many notable players in Wake Forest to participate in when a sub is needed.  David is also serving as liaison to the Town of Wake Forest Park and Recreation Advisory Board where he has served since 2005.

Cheryl Sweitzer -TreasurerCheryl Sweitzer

Cheryl became involved with Wake Forest tennis in 2002 when Barb Avery and Toni Moxley held a community meeting to guage interest in tennis in the area. The movement began with ladies doubles on Saturday mornings and resulted in WFATA being formed. Cheryl served as an early board member, then held offices of Treasurer and Vice-President. She stepped in to serve as interim President twice when the person in that position had to resign unexpectedly. Cheryl has been the Avery Cup League coordinator for many years. This league won the NCTA Team Event of the Year in 2008, awarded by Omega Sports. She has captained several World Team Tennis Teams, a senior 3.5 ladies team, and played on two 6.5 combo teams that advanced to state playoffs.

Kim Patreykim_profile - Board Member

I have been a resident of North Carolina for about 12 years.  I have three wonderful children that help keep me young at heart.  I have enjoyed volunteering in the community in various ways.  Whether it is at the local food banks, school PTA’s, church, neighborhood groups.I picked up tennis towards the end of 2009 and have been going full force since then.  I love to play singles, doubles; mixed doubles…it’s all great fun!  I love the competition and camaraderie that come with the game.  I have met many wonderful people due to this fantastic sport. It’s a lifelong sport that you are never too old to learn!  I am also an avid supporter of the Quick Start Tennis and I am so thrilled to see its growth here in North Carolina.I enjoy serving and looking for ways to make a positive difference in the lives of others.  I look forward to many positive changes here at Wake Forest Flaherty Tennis Park.

Bruce Tompkins - Past President - AdvisorBruce

Bruce became involved with the WFATA Board shortly after moving to Wake Forest in 2003.  He has filled a variety of roles for the Tennis Board over the years beginning with tournament chairman and Flaherty Park Court Grand Opening Committee Chair.  Bruce has played in about every type of tennis event the Tennis Association has offered but really enjoys the singels ladder and Avery Cup.  His goal is to continue to play tennis and help the Association grow as a sport for a lifetime.  He first picked up a tennis racket back in 1970 and hasn't put it down since."
